The Father is the Son’s First Hero

I recently asked my Mom what she thought about me trying to start up my Dad’s blog again and she gave me her blessing. My Dad started this blog in June of 2015 and originally planned to post one or two times a week after publishing his first book. In the first post he said, “My passion and dream is to write honestly about the Christian life, the Bible, and the Church.” His last post on here was in October of 2022.

For those who may not know, my Dad died last year in September of 2025 after battling an illness at the age of 74. I want to continue writing this blog for the same reasons he started it, but I also want to write to continue his legacy. Inevitably, in doing so, I will include some of my own thoughts, experiences, and opinions. I hope that’s okay and I hope people will want to read what I have to say about my Dad, my family, the Bible, and other things. To start, I want to try to post one or two times a month instead of weekly. We will see if anyone reads them or wants to.

My Dad was a pastor for over 50 years. He lived in 3 states, served in 4 churches, and wrote 2 books. I have access to hundreds of his sermons and to a lot of his books. My Dad was an avid reader and a Bible scholar; I am neither. I was close with my Dad, but not as close as we should have been because of the way I am sometimes. My Dad had flaws, but was a great man. I still have a long way to go if I want to be like him. I currently live in West Texas and I have a beautiful wife and daughter. I also live in close proximity to my Mom, my Sister, and my Nephews.

I also promise any readers that I will try to be more interesting or at least funny in future posts!

Lastly regarding the title…..I think the Father is a Son’s first hero if he does it right. That is certainly true for me. Please let me know your thoughts and reach out if you want to here on WordPress (and subscribe), by email at rmmeven@gmail.com, or on Facebook.

  2. YES, Rob… by all means, please pick up where your dad left off!! And, could you do me a favor by subscribing me using a different email address?  I don’t use my Yahoo address much any more.  This one is better: dannymize51@gmail.com Once that is set up, I will unsubscribe from my Yahoo address.  I miss the days of visiting with your dad, on and off the racquetball court. He was a great man … and way above my intellectual level. But, that didn’t keep him from having me as his friend.  He was also funny and enjoyed laughing together! After his diagnosis and his entering into the Jan Werner program, I never heard any more about him. And, your blog was the first I knew of his death. That saddens me… but, it also brings good memories to the forefront.  From what I read in this “testing the waters” blog, YOU are a good writer, too!  You will bless many people through this medium!  Thanks for picking it up! Blessings to you and your entire family! Danny Danny MizeAmarillo, Texas806-576-8282

    • Danny- I guess I can’t unsubscribe you because I can’t figure it out, but you can through your email if you go to the post. Also you can subscribe with any email if you go to the post and scroll down until you see subscribe button and type in your gmail email.

It was obvious that my Dad was fond of you. He encouraged me to reach out to you when I was trying to move to Texas so many years ago. I wrote one blog back in 2017 I think it was and you were encouraging back then also. I’m sorry for you to find out about his death this way, but I bet you assumed it happened and I hope it gives you closure. Thank you for being a friend to my Dad when he moved to Texas and for being you. Please keep in touch.

  3. Rob,

This touched my heart!!! For a moment, when reading it to Greg, I thought there was some email hacking going on. We learned so much from your dad and look forward to somewhat of a refresher course when you refer to him. We also look forward to reading your blog with your thoughts and hearing about you all. Thank you for holding up the tradition your dad started. Linda Doyle
